1. Start with a genuine problem, not an impressive component
A beginner project should always solve a real small-scale and specific problem of yours or your surroundings. Think “It takes me too much time to track my tasks,” “I need a better system to regulate temperature in my room,” or “Lab announcements are hard to keep track of.”
Projects to consider:
• A simple application to track expenses and budget.
• A notice board for hostel/class announcements.
2. Don’t be greedy
In your first year, the focus should be on finishing one thing properly, rather than developing many unfinished things at once. Your goal is to have something completed, not start a business.
Good first projects:
• Your first calculator/tic-tac-toe console game after completing your first programming courses.
3. Follow a simple project cycle
Follow this simple development cycle, a lighter version of the engineering design process.
1. State your problem in one sentence, List 3-5 key features (requirement list), Create your first rough sketch: screen, blocks, flow, Create an MVP, Test the idea on yourself or your friend, Improve something based on the feedback, Tell us what you did and what you have learned,
4. Leverage what you're currently learning
Combine your projects with what you're currently learning:
After "Intro to C/Python": create an app that organizes files or creates a quiz, and after the basics of electronics: create an LED blinking app, an alarm, or some kind of indicator that is based on a sensor.
5. Document your projects and share them with others
• Project name and its description.
• Technologies used.
• Features and your role in their development.
• Screenshots or a small demo video.
Post all these info on LinkedIn or send it to your friends. In this way, you will have a good base for your portfolio.
6. Gaining experience through hackathons and your classmates
Arya College of Engineering & I.T. says to attend college hackathons or coding competitions. There you will learn how to do something on time, how to work in a team, and solve some problems. All these skills will be very useful for your first-year projects.
Work on small projects, finish them, and learn something new from each of them, and after finishing the first year, you will have all the skills and experience that many seniors lack.
